6/24/02 - The review for THOSE WERE THE DAYS is now available.

6/20/02 - The review for MISSION OF JUSTICE is now available.

When I e-mailed Mei Ah in regards to the re-release of some early titles with anamorphic transfers, I received the following response -

Yes, we have plan to re-release some older but famous titles with our
recently improved DVD process, but due to commercial reason this is not the right time to disclose yet. Hope you will enjoy them.

6/15/02 - SCOOP TIME! Please be warned that the upcoming Buena Vista DVD of THE KILLER will be the R-rated cut and not the director's approved version that has been available from Criterion, Winstar, Universe, and HKVideo. There are reports that John Woo himself is FURIOUS that Disney would not even talk to him about releasing the KILLER uncut. HARD BOILED and BULLET IN THE HEAD will also be CUT when they are released by Buena Vista.

6/10/02 - Review for BULLETS OF LOVE is available.

6/3/02 - Lots of site maintenance just got finished. Pages should be loading 50% faster. BULLETS OF LOVE review coming real soon.

4/21/02 - Jackie Chan does most of his own stunts but there are times when even he gets a double. This is where Yuen Biao steps in. For screenshots of scenes where Biao doubled, check out KC WOMAN's post on her YUEN BIAO - TRIPLE THREAT DOUBLE forum. For a list of her other equally great forums, click here.

4/4/02 - I asked DVDREVIEW.COM if their DVD of DRUNKEN MASTER contained the audio problem and they said yes and will amend the review. This is what they were told -

The disc is not defective. The problem is that the Cantonese audio track has been defective beyond repair in certain parts of the film. In order to have the gaps filled, Columbia decided to insert he English dub instead in these scenes. While it's a bit distracting, it is certainly still better than having those parts entirely silent, since the music and sound effects would be lost as well otherwise.

3/13/02 - IMPORTANT! If you pre-ordered the upcoming Columbia version of DRUNKEN MASTER, you may want to cancel it for now. I have seen two reviews were they stated that the soundtrack switches from Cantonese to English at times.

2/1/02 - Love and Bullets and HKFLIX present the Valentine's Day DVD giveaway! To enter, click here and tell me what you consider to be a good Hong Kong "date" movie. The 1st prize will be the COMRADES:ALMOST A LOVE STORY DVD, starring Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung. The 2nd and 3rd prizes will be CD singles with the songs from the HKFLIX commercial and Girls With Guns video. If you request to be put on the HKFLIX mailing list, you will get an extra entry. Good luck! Winners will be announced 2/14/2002.

1/28/02 - The HARD BOILED review has been updated. I watched the Winstar version on the widescreen TV and it looks pretty good but the subtitles are below the picture which is annoying.

The movie SHIRI will be playing in New York City in February. UNCUT and in its original language!

More classic Jet Li DVD reviews coming!

1/27/02 - If you liked the music from the two videos on the site, you will be happy to know that a CD single will be available next week with both songs. E-mail me for details.

1/15/02 - Now available, reviews for SWORDMAN 2 and DRAGON CHRONICLES THE MAIDENS OF HEAVENLY MOUNTAIN.

HKFLIX is carrying the uncut Taiwanese version of BLACK MASK by Thundermedia.

1/8/02 - The review for THE SHAO LIN TEMPLE is now available.

1/1/02 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The winner of the HERO NEVER DIES DVD contest is Robert MacDonald.

Here is his list of movies :

1. The Mission
2. In The Mood For Love
3. Big Bullet
4. Big Boss (Fists of Fury)
5. Fists of Fury (The Chinese Connection)
6. Young and Dangerous
7. The Storm Riders
8. Story of Ricky (guilty pleasure)
9. The Bride With White Hair
10. Love on a Diet

I also urge you to take a look at HKFILM.NET . There is a very well done page explaining what Disney is doing to Hong Kong movies.

12/28/01 - The review for SHAOLIN TEMPLE will be up soon! There are lots more on the way. The updates have been slow because of the holiday season but things will be picking up again shortly.

12/17/01 - The review for SHAOLIN SOCCER is now available.

12/12/01 - I've been a little sick this week so the reviews have been a little sparse. SHAOLIN SOCCER will probably be next. I have recently purchased a 47 inch Panasonic widescreen TV so it's a big step up from the 27 inch I have been using. SHAOLIN SOCCER is anamorphic so it looked pretty good on the big TV.

AVDEALS is selling the Malata again. It has the firmware upgrade. The crashes have been fixed but there still are the PHANTOM MENACE subtitle issues.

12/9/01 - The review for THE NEW LEGEND OF SHAOLIN is now available.

WIN A HERO NEVER DIES ON DVD!!!

HKFLIX.com and Love and Bullets give you a chance to win A HERO NEVER DIES on DVD! Do you think it's easy to make a "Top 10" list of Hong Kong movies? How about if you couldn't list movies directed by John Woo or Yuen Woo Ping, or starring Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan? Still easy? Respond with a "Top 10" list of movies that doesn't include movies by those mentioned previously. A winner will be picked at random and I will put the lists on my site. To double you chance to win, ask for the HKFLIX.COM newsletter with your entry! All entries must be received by 1/1/02. The winner will be announced 1/2/02.

12/2/01 - The A BETTER TOMORROW I and II reviews now have the Media Asia and Anchor Bay reviews on the same page.

12/1/01 - The review for HIGH RISK is now available.

11/28/01 - The HKFLIX.COM and Love and Bullets Jet Li promotion has been extended to the end of the year.

The review for the Mei Ah version of BLACK MASK as well as DRAGON FOREVER.

Lots of reviews of Jet Li movies coming!

11/27/01 - Criterion has announced that they will be releasing a special edition of Wong Kar Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE in Spring of 2002.

11/20/01 - Happy Thanksgiving from Love and Bullets! There probably won't be an update for a couple of days but there is a bunch of reviews on the way. All the reviews have been updated recently and most have screen captures. The reviews for movies that have more than version will be condensed into one soon. With new versions coming out all the time, it's easy to compare them this way.

11/18/01 - The review for Universe's DRAGON FOREVER will be up soon.

11/16/01 - The review for the HKL version of Jet Li's HITMAN is now available.

11/9/01 - The Malata upgrade is still being worked on and will fix the problems that people are having with the Stargate and Phantom Menace DVD's. AVDEALS has stopped carrying these players but a quick search on Google or any other search engine will quickly list a bunch of other places that still sell it. I can't give a specific date for the upgrade but a couple of weeks might be about right.

Why all the the fuss over this player? The Malata N996 will play any region coded DVD and also do the PAL to NTSC conversion just about perfectly. What this means is that with this player, you are really free to choose the best version of a movie. I wouldn't have even thought of buying a Hong Kong Legends DVD before I owned this player.

When I have more information about the upgrade, I will post it.

11/8/01 - The reviews for FIST OF LEGEND have been combined for the Dimension and Ritek versions. I have also put reviews for Region 1 versions of the KILLER on one page.

11/4/01 - The reviews for HARD BOILED have been updated and combined into one.

11/3/01 - Matt Steven's review of HKVIDEO's THE KILLER is now up.

The review for the Hong Kong Legends version of HITMAN and IN THE LINE OF DUTY will be up soon.

11/1/01 - Lots of stuff coming soon! Matt Stevens does it again with a review of the long version of THE KILLER that is part of the French HKVIDEO special edition. Speaking of THE KILLER, the reviews for the region 1 versions will be condensed to one page and the same for the HARD BOILED reviews. They needed updating so I figured it would be best to keep all the information on one page.

Be sure to check out the special Jet Li promotion from HKFLIX.COM. This is only for Love and Bullets visitors!

10/29/01 - Wednesday, October 31st is the last day for the Girls with Guns promo.

10/25/01 - The GIRLS WITH GUNS trailer is now up. It's about 20 megs but it is worth it. If you liked the HKFLIX.COM commercial, you will enjoy this one. Big thanks to Marty Munsch and U.S. CHAOS for the music.

10/23/01 - Big update today! First off, AVDEALS says that they will have the firmware fix by November 1st for the MALATA DVD Players.

The review for THE INSPECTOR WEARS SKIRTS is now available.

Screen Captures have been added to the WING CHUN review.

The trailer I was working on is now done and I will be uploading it this evening. It's got clips from all your favorite Girls With Guns movies.

10/16/01 - For those of you who have purchased the MALATA DVD player from AVDEALS, you will be happy to know that a firmware upgrade will be available soon to fix some glitches the player is having, namely with the PHANTOM MENACE DVD, among others. If you have very recently ordered one, please check out this page for more information.

10/10/01 - The links section has been updated. Check out a great web site called HONG KONG FILM REVIEWS.

10/8/01 - The review for IN THE LINE OF DUTY V is now available.

10/4/01 - The review for IN THE LINE OF DUTY IV is now available. Some more screen shots have been added to the NAKED KILLER review. Matt has also updated his POLICE STORY review to address concerns some have had about the aspect ratio.

The 2nd newsletter will be coming out on October 7th.

10/1/01 - The ultimate review of the HKL POLICE STORY DVD by Matt Stevens is now available.

9/24/01 - Screen shots have been added to the YES, MADAM! and ROYAL WARRIORS reviews.

9/19/01 - The review for THE LONGEST NITE is now available.

The month of October will be "Girls With Guns" month. I have been planning this since the last newsletter. There will be a special promotion with HKFLIX.COM. The reviews for IN THE LINE OF DUTY 3,4,5, SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT and THE INSPECTOR WEARS SKIRTS will be up in in early October. The reviews for ROYAL WARRIORS and YES, MADAM! are already available but will be redone to include screen captures.

9/15/01- I tried to volunteer in New York today and try to help in some way. There were over a thousand people there from as far as Texas who wanted to help. I didn't get to do much more than load donated supplies on a truck. I wish I could have done more. The police stressed that they had more than enough volunteers and donated food and supplies. They said the best thing to do would be to contact the American Red Cross to volunteer time and money. They were so appreciative of everybody's support.

The reviews should start up again sometime next week.

In the meantime, here is a link to an early review for the GAME OF DEATH DVD. A big thank you to Almar Haflidason for sending me the link.

9/11/01 - My sincerest sympathies to all the victims and their families of the plane crashes and World Trade Center disaster.

9/7/01 - The newsletter has been sent out. The review for THE ODD ONE DIES will be available very soon.

8/29/01 - I hear IRON MONKEY will have 7-8 minutes of cuts, new subtitles, and totally new music when released in theaters in the next couple of weeks. It seems that they will still have the Cantonese dialogue.

The review for Hong Kong Legends' DRUNKEN MASTER is now available.

8/27/01 - The reviews for IRON MONKEY are now available. Unlike the version being shown in the theater, these DVD's show the uncut movie with the original music.

The review for Hong Kong Legends version of DRUNKEN MASTER is coming real soon.

8/23/01 - The review for the Hong Kong Legends version of ARMOUR OF GOD is now available.

Many reviews on the way! DRUNKEN MASTER and two versions of IRON MONKEY!

Iron Monkey is being released in theaters soon and it's unconfirmed if the original language is intact. Rumor has it that cuts were made.

8/18/01 - Love and Bullets will soon be reviewing some Region 2 DVD's from Hong Kong Legends.

Don't forget to sign up for the newsletter. The first one will be going out soon!

7/29/01 - The review for the Dimension (Buena Vista) version of FIST OF LEGEND has been updated with screen shots.

7/26/01 - The review for the Ritek version of FIST OF LEGEND is now available. In short, I would definitely take this over the Buena Vista version. In the review, I'll tell you why.

A big thank you to Marty Munsch and the band U.S. CHAOS for producing and providing the music for a project I am working on for HKFLIX.COM. In a week or so it should be available for download.

6/7/01 - Most of the pages that have had problems with Netscape have been fixed.

A lot of people have been asking about anamorphic versions of THE KILLER and HARD BOILED lately so I e-mailed WINSTAR and Maryann Manelski was kind enough to reply. It looks like there aren't any plans at this time for Winstar to do anamorphic transfers for THE KILLER and HARD BOILED.

It was mentioned last August in a homtheaterforum.com chat with Winstar representatives that THE KILLER would be revisited somewhere down the road. I guess we'll all be waiting a little longer.

6/6/01 - It's come to my attention that Netscape users may have some problems with the search pages. I am working on correcting this. In the meantime, please check the Site Map for a total list of reviews.

4/18/01 - The revised review for A BETTER TOMORROW is now available.

Just a reminder ! The FILM FORUM is showing ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA I the week of April 27 - May 3rd. ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA II will be showing May 4 - May 10th. These are new prints with new subtitles. OUATIC I is the uncut version.

4/16/01 - A big thanks to Matt Stevens for providing reviews for NOWHERE TO HIDE and TELL ME SOMETHING.

4/12/01 - The review for IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is now up.

While checking DVDFILE.COM today, I came across an announcement that CITY ON FIRE will be released by Buena Vista with the original soundtrack and an anamorphic transfer. I checked and some e-tailers have it listed for release on July 17. If the movie is uncut, this is extremely good news.

4/10/01 - Just back from vacation so a new review will be up soon!

3/31/01 - Review for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is now up.

3/28/01 - The review for MIRACLES is now up. Lots of stuff on the way.

A revised review of A BETTER TOMORROW will be up in a week or so. There will also be a new video added soon.

3/22/01 - Some great news if you live in the New York area! I can't wait to see this movie in the theater.

3/16/01 - It appears that the "corrected" ABT DVD's do have a ten second drop out towards the beginning of the movie. I have gotten e-mail from several people who have noticed it. For more information, check out this discussion at the Home Theater Forum.

3/14/01 - There has been some posts lately on the newsgroups and forums that the "corrected" version of Anchor Bay Entertainments's A BETTER TOMORROW DVD may have problems. Most noticeably, missing sound for ten seconds in the beginning of the film. There may also be dropouts occasionally throughout the movie. I haven't seen this personally yet since I am still waiting for my DVD to come in the mail.

If you have this problem with your DVD, or other problems, please e-mail me. I would like to contact Anchor Bay and see what can be done.

It looks like it's true that Buena Vista is releasing there own version of BULLET IN THE HEAD. We can only hope that it's not a chopped up, poorly English dubbed version with a different title.

3/13/01 - The Big Picture is the new site of the week! This is a great place to check daily for new releases and any news related to DVD's.

3/12/01 - The review for GOD OF GAMBLER'S RETURN is now up.

3/8/01 - Reviews for GOD OF GAMBLER'S RETURN and EASY MONEY coming soon.

3/4/01 - All winners of the ABT DVD contest are guaranteed to have the DVD with the corrected sound. As soon as I get one myself I will put up a review of it. I kept the one with the altered soundtrack so I can compare them. All the New Jersey stores I have seen that did have the ABT DVD have the one with the altered soundtrack. If you plan on getting this, check the box first. All the online stores still have this listed as having the 5.1 Cantonese track so there's a high possibility that if you order, you may get the altered one.

2/28/01 - I checked some stores in the New Jersey area for the corrected ABT DVD. Tower Records still has the one with the altered soundtrack. Suncoast didn't have any at all. I have also checked with the major online DVD stores and they only list ABT as having the 5.1 Cantonese track which is the altered version.

2/23/01 - I just received this e-mail from Anchor Bay Entertainment with an update on the A BETTER TOMORROW DVD's.

This email is for the customers who have purchased our DVD of A BETTER TOMORROW and are wanting to replace their defective DVDs with recently repressed ones.Retailers are being shipped the new discs which are identifiable by looking at the back of the package: By the Dolby Digital symbol you should see the words:Cantonese: Mono
English: Mono

You can exchange your copies with your retailer, or send them in to Anchor Bay Entertainment for a replacement. We do ask that you try to exchange them with your retailer first. In the event this doesn't work, you can send in your DVD to:

Barbara Gerczak
c/o Anchor Bay Entertainment
1699 Stutz Drive
Troy, MI 48084

The new discs contain the original Cantonese mono track, an English Mono track, and also a unadvertised Mandarin Mono Track. We hope that this will be satisfactory to everyone. Please note that these are MONO tracks, and there is no 5.1 on this disc as there was on the previous issue.

Thank you.

Webmaster

2/22/01 - The review for A HERO NEVER DIES is now up.

2/17/01 - I big thank you to Ronald Slender for telling me about The R2 Project. The R2 Project has an announcement from TARTAN that they will be releasing on March 19th an anamorphic version of HARD BOILED. This is to be the uncut version and also has some interesting extras. One that stands out is an uncut scene comparison.

I'm still awaiting word on the A BETTER TOMORROW DVD's. I will post any information as soon as I get it.

I was thinking of adding a "Top Ten" list of must view Hong Kong DVD's. Please e-mail me with what you think they should be. I think this will be interesting to the hard core fans as well as newcomers. Please give short reasons for your selections.

2/13/01 - The review for STORY OF RICKY is now up. Classic movie and definitely recommended.

2/8/01 - Reviews coming soon for A HERO NEVER DIES and the STORY OF RICKY. There's a lot more coming after that.

I still haven't heard a new release date for the ABT I DVD's. I will post it as soon as I get word.

2/4/01 - Finally added screen shots for Fallen Angels.

2/3/01 - Screen shots have been added to the reviews of the Criterion versions of THE KILLER and HARD BOILED. This version of THE KILLER is the best out of the current versions on DVD. I also really like the Universe version because the translation is what I remember it being when I saw the movie in the theater. The Winstar version isn't bad and it's cheaper than buying the Criterion version on E Bay.

The Criterion version of HARD BOILED has a lot of extras but is very dark. Adjusting the brightness on your TV makes it better. The Winstar version doesn't have the extras but the picture is brighter. If you don't mind not having the extras, this isn't bad at all.

Winstar still has no set date when these will be released in anamorphic versions.

1/30/01- Dragon's Den U.K. is the new web site of the week.

The links section keeps growing. If you have a site you wish included, please let me know.

1/26/01 - Almost back up to speed after a hard drive crash last week.

I added some links grouping some of the DVD's by actors and directors. I will be adding some more soon.

The review for Columbia's OUATIC is taking a while because I want to watch the Mega Star version the same day. The A Better Tomorrow DVD made me a lot more careful about how I review different releases of movies.

1/19/01 - A big thanks to Matthew Plourde for forwarding the following information from Michael Felsher from Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Just letting you know that we do in fact have the Cantonese Mono
Track...and we used the English track as a comparison and the sound effects are identical on the English Mono and our Cantonese Mono tracks, so everything should be fine in a few weeks.
Michael Felsher

Prizes for the contest are in the mail. If you won an A BETTER TOMORROW I DVD, I will let you know when I get the corrected version to send out.

Due to some computer maintenance, updates may be slow the next couple of days.

1/16/01 - With all the fuss over the ABT I DVD, I almost forgot to mention that the review for PORTLAND STREET BLUES is now up.

1/16/01 - I just got this update from Michael Felsher over at Anchor Bay. Good news!

Hello, This email is being sent out to those of you who have contacted us regarding the defective Cantonese audio track on our DVD release of A BETTER TOMORROW. We regret that this situation has occurred, and we apologize to anyone who was disappointed or inconvienienced. This matter came to our attention very early this morning (January 16th), and we immediately set about to determine the best course of action in rectifying the problem. Currently all replication of the current DVD version of A BETTER TOMORROW has stopped. We are going to be re-pressing the title using the original Cantonese Mono audio track which will replace the existing Cantonese tracks on the DVD. The English audio on both the DVD & VHS editions are not affected by this. We expect to have corrected copies of the DVD the first week of February. Proceedures for the return and/or exchange of the copies currently on the market will be announced soon. Again we regret that this situation has occurred, and we will correct it as soon as possible. Thank you.

1/15/01 - A quick but important update tonight. It's been pointed out that I missed the fact that the A BETTER TOMORROW I DVD does not have the original music in a few places throughout the movie. I am sure that Anchor Bay did not intentionally do this. I will e-mail them to see if something will be done about the soundtrack.

1/14/01 - Winners have been notified for the contest. A list of winners has been posted here. Thanks to everybody that entered.

1/11/01 - The drawing for the A BETTER TOMORROW I & II DVD's is 1/12 at midnight. I will notify the winners Saturday.

The review for THE RULES OF THE GAME is now up.

1/6/01 - The reviews for A BETTER TOMORROW and A BETTER TOMORROW II are now up!

1/2/01 - As promised, the contest officially starts today where you can win DVD's of Anchor Bay Entertainment's A Better Tomorrow I & II DVD's. For the details, please click here. Reviews for the two DVD's will be up Thursday and Friday. Thanks to Anchor Bay, there will be a total of 15 winners.

Lots of reviews coming during January.

The region-3 DVD of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will be released early January and is available as a special order from HKFLIX.COM.
